What is skin cancer?
Skin cancer is a disease that occurs when the cells in the skin grow abnormally, often because of damage caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or tanning beds. There are three main types of skin cancer:
- basal cell carcinoma,
- squamous cell carcinoma
- melanoma
Basal and squamous cell carcinomas are the most common types of skin cancer and are usually easily treatable when detected early.
Melanoma, on the other hand, is a more aggressive form of skin cancer that can spread to other parts of the body if left untreated.
What are the risk factors for skin cancer?
Risk factors for skin cancer include a family history of the disease, fair skin, a history of sunburns, and exposure to UV radiation from the sun or tanning beds. Skin cancer can appear in different forms, such as changes in the size, shape, or colour of a mole or the appearance of new spots on the skin. It's crucial to identify these changes early on to ensure prompt diagnosis and treatment.
How to treat skin cancer?
Treatment for skin cancer varies depending on the type and stage of cancer, but it often involves surgical removal of the affected area. In some cases, radiation therapy or topical treatments may also be used. If detected early, skin cancer is highly treatable, and patients can go on to live healthy and fulfilling lives. However, if left untreated, skin cancer can spread to other parts of the body and become life-threatening. It's crucial to seek medical attention if you notice any changes in your skin or have any concerns about skin cancer.
